Question:
Is there a place I can go and have something tested to see if it is a drug? My daughter got something in the mail from her soon to be ex-boyfriend but it was crushed. I would like to do this without getting into any legal trouble. Is that possible?
Answer:
To avoid any potential problems with somehow being checked and found in possession of an illegal substance, I would suggest that Mom call the local Police first, tell them that she has a suspected drug and she wants to have it identified. A police officer will likely then come to see her to take the drug, or make arrangements to meet and deliver the suspect material. This way she has someone who can back up her story if she were to be checked. Some Police departments or Drug Units have access to "presumptive field test kits", this will give an indication as to what the drug is. It does not give purity levels, but in most cases that is not an issue. In short, it is either a drug or something else.
A police expert on drugs is the best one to speak with as they have the expertise to interpret results and observations of the physical substance. There is the chance of "false positive" reading that an expert will be able to interpret. This is a quick way for Mom to get an answer and is not required to pay for expensive testing if the drug is turned over to the Police. It does not have to be identified back to Mom, as it can be subject of a "No Case Seizure". Police can then have it tested at their lab or a Government lab at their cost, if they felt it was necessary. If it turns out to be a drug, the Police would certainly appreciate any information Mom can supply on the "boyfriend", this can be done anonymously.
Hope this helps.
